    Portraits

    Design: Vitold Polyak

Portraits: Short Stories of No One in Particular is a collection of character studies about love, life, and the regrets we carry with us. Each piece is a kind of “portrait” of a character, their personality and how they make different decisions.

Portraits is available exclusively from the Kindle store for only $0.99.

Some of these characters will appear in future works of mine, and some won’t. Here is a synopsis of each story:

Meet Roger and Annalise. They’re about to meet for the first time and start a life together. It’s funny how life outlasts what we do with it.

Meet Mikey. Mikey has built a lot out of nothing. He runs the West-End now. But it’s come with a price and today Mikey has to remember that.

Meet Abigail. Abbey has had a really rough day, and she’s not sure what to do about it, but she’ll make the best out of it with what she has.

Meet Jackie. She’s been in Paris for a few days now and she’s about to be reminded just how small of a world it is that we live in.

Meet Charlie. No matter how drunk or tired Charlie gets, he can’t sleep. Charlie is exhausted and he has a very tough decision to make. But can Charlie follow through?

Meet Bobby. Lately, it seems like Bobby can’t do anything right, and the harder he tries, the more he embarrasses himself.

Meet Joe. Joe thought he’d have breakfast alone this morning, but an old memory thought it’d invite themselves along.

Meet Dawn. She labours and she loves. You might say that her life is a labour of love.

Meet Billie. It’s her first day at a new job and she’s about to be visited by a bad memory from her past.

    Rum Socialism

    Design Vitold Polyak

Rum Socialism: A Travel Diary of Communist Cuba (official site) is a satirical travel memoir that follows author Kris Romaniuk off the resort and onto the streets of Trinidad, Cuba, where he meets street hustlers, witch doctors, corrupt cops, and foreign operatives. The outcome is a week-long bender of colorful characters and insight into Cuban Communism — a system that is trying desperately to reinvent itself in the face of harsh economic realities.

“[Rum Socialism] gradually builds in drama, laughs and tension until before you know it [you’re] flying across Cuban roads in a police car in the middle of the night hunting criminals.”
    — ForgetTheBox.net

“[…] the book has a strong voice, plenty of drinking, and a voyage out from the safety of the all-inclusive resort in Cuba that leaves the reader both wondering what-if and wanting more.”

    Coming Soon: The Family Carr

    Design: Vitold Polyak

Roger let go a promising career to raise his two kids when his wife walked out on him. Billie has been looking after her family ever since her mother left when was nine. Abel is growing up all on his own and will soon be ready to leave the nest. The Carrs haven’t had it easy, but they’ve had it together.

When tragedy strikes and the Carrs are forced to rebuild again, each of them are met with opportunities to start new lives on their own path. As they struggle over whether to go their separate ways or stay together as a family, it becomes clear that no choice is straightforward and that there are trade-offs one way or another. More still, it seems that that something very dark and powerful may be behind their hardship and their options, and that there might be something more on the line than just their lifestyle.
